First thing's first:
I told Jessica I'd put this picture up:
Crazy teenage girls with their pop idol crushes... Haha. Anyway, that's the Korean actor, Won Bin, in a scene from Taegukgi, a really good movie about two brothers during the Korean War. Unfortunately, it had a pretty limited showing over here a few months back. I think it was only at a couple of theaters in the area for a few weeks. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if it gets nominated for Best Foreign Film during the Oscars.
Japanese Food - The Sequel:
I had Japanese food for the second time this week when Kevin Q., Marli, James, Mae, Lanie, Eric, Justine, and I had all you can eat sushi and stuff earlier today at O-Nami. Those of us (myself included) who got there when it opened ended up staying for the entirety of their 3 hour lunch period. Hey, we gotta get our money's worth. I don't remember the last time I felt that full. Good stuff!
Well, I thought eating sashimi during New Year's was a Hawaiian thing so I asked Kevin about it. He was the one who brought up the idea to meet there today. He's originally from Hawaii.
Me: Isn't eating sashimi in Hawaii a New Year's thing?
Kevin: Huh? No, I think it's an everyday thing.
Haha. So I guess for those of us who love raw fish, who needs a special occasion to eat it?
Things I realized this week that I should probably change next year: ^_^;
1. Windshield wipers - They're so worn down that it's really hard (and dangerous) to drive in the rain.
2. Tires - ditto
3. Bass guitar strings - I haven't changed them in three or four years. I guess I never noticed how bad they sounded.
Okay, so they weren't exactly New Year's resolutions. Happy New Year everyone!

Okay, I've been watching a bunch of entries for the Yellowcard music video contest on ifilm.com. I think the scoring system for the contest is a little weird. Out of 150+ entries, the top five are chosen based on votes from the general public. Then Yellowcard looks over these five videos and chooses one to be their official video for the song "Breathing". I think it may be a little skewed because the band would probably only get to watch the top five videos with the most votes. These may not necessarily be the best videos. They would just be the most popular videos. Think of it as the same as say... using the top 5 movies with the most box office earnings as the Oscar nominees for best picture. Then again, marketing and publicity are part of the business as well.
Anyway, here are my Top Five selections (in no particular order):
Anyway, here are my Top Five selections (in no particular order):
- Flaviu Mann - Probably the best camera work out of all of them. Cranes/jibs and dollies?
- Philip Wang - I liked the plot in this one. It reminds me of Korean music videos. I could relate to it, especially with the ending scene. Haha.
- Bracey Smith - This had a creative way of incorporating a storyline unrelated to the lyrics with the song.
- Jeremy Lassetter - This one's animated. Pretty creative interpretation of the lyrics.

Yellowcard Music Video:
Mando told me that ifilm.com is having a contest to see who can make the best music video for the song "Breathing" by Yellowcard. One of his friends, Flaviu Mann, has an entry in the contest. I was looking through the names, and I recognized the name Philip Wang as one of the guys in UCSD's Wong Fu Productions. These videos were cool. There were a few others that were really good as well. However, there were some that sort of made me wonder a bit. O_o Anyway, it's too bad the deadline for entry submissions has already passed. I would have loved to see how I would fare. Oh, well. Maybe next time. Oh yeah, that song always reminds me of Burnout 3, a racing game for the PS2. Maybe because I first heard the song on the game's soundtrack. Yes, I realize that a lot of things I know about pop culture, I learned from video games or the internet (instead of from TV like most people.)
Broken Strap:
I also broke my guitar strap yesterday. The leather sort of just tore apart. Don't they ever perform any stress tests on these things? This happened right before the service started. Good thing Josh had an extra one at home that he had his family bring over. Now I have to buy a new one. I'm looking for quality this time. No more cheapo straps that rip in two.
Lunch with Amy and Manny:
Yay, Amy and Manny came down for the holidays. We met up for some lunch at Genkai, a Japanese restaurant in Irvine, the same place we ate at about a couple of years ago. (or is it three?) This was only the second time I had ever eaten there. They got me a Jelly Belly tin can (with jelly beans, of course.) ^_^ Good stuff, good stuff. Thanks, guys. When it was still wrapped, I thought that the bean-shaped can felt like a couple of cans of vienna sausages. Haha. Well, no Kevin this year. He's snowboarding down Italian slopes and viewing pieces of Persian walls in French museums. Anyway...

So... Christmas Eve, I stopped by church for one of the Christmas Eve services. Quite a few people were already asking about the status of the musical DVD. Eeek! ^_^ Then, my family spent Christmas Eve at my sister-in-law's parents' house.
Today, Christmas Day, we went to my aunt and uncle's new house in Corona. A funny thing was that they bought the model home in the community along with the furnishings that were already there. This included the faux computer which was essentially a plastic keyboard and LCD screen. A lot of objects were also glued to other things. I suppose that this was supposed to deter people from taking stuff during open houses. But, because it was the model home, I think they got a good deal on it. Plus, it was already furnished, too.
As usual, pictures may be found on my Yahoo! photos site:

Merry Christmas everyone! Gotta go for now, but I'll put up another update later. In the meantime, try the Santa Slingshot game. Can anyone beat 334.3 meters? I've gotten it several times, but I could never seem to surpass that barrier.
Also, check out the featurette for The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe due out next Christmas.

Car Problem Of The Week:
Leftmost brake light (one of two on the left side) is out. The taillight still functions, but it looks like the filament for the brake light portion of the bulb has burnt out.

Hotmail okay (for now?):
So today, after at least four days, I was able to check my email again. Before that, all I would get were "Page cannot be displayed" messages or the occasional "Server too busy" screen. The strange thing was that checking another hotmail account using my same computer works just fine. It must have been a problem with the server my particular account was stored in.
Children's Christmas Musical:
Anyway, it was a pretty packed weekend. Saturday was the day of the Children's Christmas Musical. The kids performed The "S" Files over at the Woodbridge High School Theater. Most of the morning and afternoon before that evening was spent preparing and setting up the stage. All the children did such a great job thanks to Lanie, the director, and everyone that helped out.
Yes, the musical was filmed on video. There will be a DVD coming out sometime next year. Eric and I will be working on it. The plan is that it will also include some special features such as:
· Behind the scenes footage of the rehearsals
· Video promo trailers
· Whatever else we haven't thought of yet...
This is in addition to live coverage of the musical, of course. So make sure you order a copy if you haven't had a chance to pre-order before this past Saturday. Here are a couple of screenshots from the raw footage:
The funny thing was right before the musical started, a lot of parents were approaching me and reminding me to make sure I get their son or daughter on camera. I would joke around and say that I might allow the videocamera to linger a bit longer than necessary for something extra under the table. I'm pretty sure every kid had ample camera time, though. ^_^

A Bed of Pasta:
I took off my bedsheets so that I can wash them. Between the sheets and the mattress, I found the strangest thing. There was a neat little pile of yellow-orange stringy stuff. It looked like a bunch of ramen or spaghetti noodles, but it wasn't soggy. I don't remember eating in bed recently. Anyway, I don't know what I was thinking, but as I was throwing the stuff away, I started to wonder what it tasted like. Big mistake. I soon realized (as I spat it out of my mouth) that it wasn't food at all. It was an old rubber band that was somehow ground up into little bits and neatly piled by my movements as I slept. Blech...
Lesson Of The Day: Rubber bands are like thicker and more elastic versions of dental floss without the minty flavor. Definitely not gourmet quality.
Movie Review Time:
Reading Amy's post about a mysterious call prompted me to watch Chakushin Ari aka You've Got A Call aka One Missed Call. The basic premise is that the characters receive a call on their cell phone. They find out that the call is from their own cell number with a time and date a couple of days into the future. The voice mail message is their own voice first saying something pretty normal like "It started raining" or "I'll take you to Popeye's" (jk). Then the message ends with a horrible scream. A few days later, when the time designated on the phone call arrives, the character dies a mysterious death. I don't know about you, but if I knew what my last words are going to be, I'd probably make an effort to avoid saying them. Sadly, the characters in the movie don't follow this advice. So... Manny, maybe you should refrain from offering to buy some chicken until you guys figure out that call.
Sure, it sounds like The Ring with cell phones or even an old Smallville episode, but this is probably one of the scariest movies I've seen in a while. Maybe it's because I can relate to a cell phone more than to VHS tapes. It's amazing how a simple everyday object can be turned around into a messenger of doom. Call me masochistic, but I changed the ringtone on my cell to the clown-like one from the movie. Creeped me out the first couple of times my phone rang. Anyway, here's my plan:
1. Find someone to watch the movie with me.
2. Have someone else call my cell phone afterwards.
3. Scream uncontrollably.
4. Repeat.
There were a couple more things of note. The main character was played by Kou Shibasaki who was in Battle Royale, another great movie. At least I know she's not getting typecast. In Battle Royale, she played this sickle-wielding psycho schoolgirl with acceptance issues. She's pretty timid in this movie. On the other hand, another actress from Battle Royale, Chiaki Kuriyama, looks like she may be typecast as a sadistic schoolgirl. You may recognize her as Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill: Vol. 1.
One of the highlights from the Chakushin Ari was when the media found out about the mysterious phone calls. When they heard of this girl that received one such call, they put her on the air in a TV special set to last until the appointed time of her death. "Will she survive? Exclusive Live Coverage!" It was like a New Year's Eve countdown. Pretty weird and disturbing concept for a TV show, but I wonder if reality TV will ever get to that point.
Anyway, it's a pretty fun and enjoyable movie if you don't mind the scares. I've got some cool new special effects to try and replicate now. ^_^
Okay, here's my other review. I finally saw Napoleon Dynamite. Lanie and Anissa were raving about it, so I had to find out what the big deal was. This movie is hilarious! There wasn't really a main plotline. The entire movie sort of reminded me of a live action version of an episode of The Simpsons. Small town with some weird characters and a story that changes direction every two minutes. I found the characters annoying at first, but they grew on me. The lines are great. It's probably has the most quotable lines since Dodgeball. I mean even just in writing, they're funny.
Trisha: Thanks for the beautiful drawing. It's hanging in my room right now.
Napoleon Dynamite: Really? It took me like three hours to finish the shading on your upper lip. It's probably the best drawing I've ever done.
Rex: I'm Rex, founder of the Rex Kwan Do self-defense system! After one week with me in my dojo, you'll be prepared to defend yourself with the strength of a grizzly, the reflexes of a puma, and the wisdom of a man.
Napoleon Dynamite: Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. You know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills...

Pictures Galore:
Okay... two relatively newcomers to our group, Jourdan and Joanna, didn't really get to have a wedding reception when they got married three years ago. So a few weeks back, the rest of us secretly planned out the surprise Tesoro Reception aka Project T-Rex aka Mosaic Christmas Party. We all chipped in and worked out the food, decorations, music, slideshow, and other details. Friday night was the big night. It was so fun, probably one of the funnest receptions I've ever been to. Even planning it out was quite enjoyable. We made them think they were attending a formal white Christmas party, but no, it was a wedding reception for them.
Some highlights of the night included:
· Numerous false alarms while waiting for the Tesoro's and having to restart the entrance music everytime.
· The MC's, Eric and James, using the phrase "Hootie-Hoo!" to get our attention before announcing the next section of the program.
· Jourdan (during his thank you speech): "I didn't really have anything prepared to say." Us: "Why not?!"
· Smashing a piñata during the Christmas party portion of the evening. The piñata had a "College & Career" label on it. Smash the old College & Career name! Make way for Mosaic! The picture I took when Jed finally broke open the piñata looked like a Skittles commercial with all the candy streaming out from the piñata.
Anyway, these pictures from Friday night may be found in:

But wait, there's more!
Tonight was the church Christmas party. The party had a Battle of the Bands theme. Lots of pictures from there, too. Just follow the link:

Project T-Rex:
Less than 18 hours before it begins...
Party Crasher:
My mom wasn't feeling well so she asked me to drop off some food and a gift at the Christmas Party tonight for the Women's Ministry. So I went, expecting to leave soon after I delivered the goods. However, they asked me to stay and eat first. If there weren't a couple of other guys there, I probably wouldn't have stayed. At least, then, I had an excuse not to deny good food. Otherwise, it would have been awkward being the only guy. I ended up staying the entire night so that I can bring an exchange gift and leftover food back home to my mom. All in all, it was pretty fun just hanging out.
This song was stuck in my own little head during the party: ^_^ (I'll let you figure out what it means.)
Huwag Na Lang Kaya
by True Faith
Nais ko ay magpakilala sa iyo
At ipahiwatig ang nilalaman ng puso ko
Maunawaan mo kaya

I went to this bank in Carson to run some errands for my dad. Lo and behold, there was a Jollibee located next door. Oh yeah! Burgers, chicken, spaghetti, and rice. Add boba for a drink. What a great combination! ^_^ Sorry, Roman. I didn't bring you with me.

0 - 60 in 4 seconds?
Ever since my brother came back from the Philippines earlier this year, he has been without a car. From time to time, he would use my car. However, the other day, he and my dad bought a car from someone. His new (used) car is also a four-door green Honda Civic like mine. His is a '97 model while mine is '98, but they're from the same generation so they look the same. Talk about confusing. Anyway, I drove his car for the first time when we went to pick up my car from the shop. A few moments after we got on the freeway, I looked down at the speedometer. What the? 100?! I know his EX has a better engine than my DX, but come on... I couldn't have underestimated how powerful its acceleration was. Then I noticed that the other cars were still moving faster. I doubt they were all going faster than 100 mph. The speedometer must be broken. Well, what I didn't notice was that speedometer was in km/h, not mph. Apparently, the vehicle was originally from Canada. I was actually moving at about 60 mph, not 100 mph.

I brought my car to the shop this morning to get the engine fixed, but the replacement parts didn't arrive there until the afternoon. Needless to say, the car didn't get fixed by the end of the day as I had hoped. Hopefully, it'll be done by tomorrow so that I have a car to use.
Oh, well. It's not as if I had anywhere to go today anyway. I spent most of the day in front of the computer working on wedding video projects. I've just been editing the live coverage of the ceremony and reception, trying to sync footage from two cameras together. This is the relatively boring part of the project. ^_^ I enjoy working on the highlight music videos much more, because there's more room for creativity. However, it helps if I work on the live coverage first so that I have more of an idea of what footage to use for the music videos. I think I have to build up a mental selection of good wedding songs, both slow and upbeat ones. It's easy if the couple has certain songs that they prefer the videos to be set to, but sometimes they just allow us to use whatever we think is appropriate.

Random Pictures from Today:
Get them while they're hot! Perfect for MySpace, Friendster, or just plain ol' blackmailing.

Weird:
The other day, I went to the mall to sell my bass guitar. I'm not sure why. I just felt like it. As I was walking into the music store, I literally ran into one of my old supervisors. We talked for a little bit, and he convinced me not to sell my bass. I looked at my guitar case and saw that the hinges were damaged. It wouldn't close properly anymore. I also ended up injuring my old boss when I bumped into him, but instead I thought to myself, "This thing cost me $80!" Anyway, he led me to some sort of travel agency type place. I somehow signed up for a "mission trip" (to Japan, I think) but it felt more like going on a tourist vacation than anything. I found out that he was also going. Strange, considering that I don't think he's a believer. I saw Lanie there, too, and she was going. (I thought she had a heart for Africa...?) Anyway, my old boss offered to give me a ride back. When we were at the parking lot, we saw that his van was blocked off. So I ended up walking home (barefoot, I might add.) Once I got home, Pastor Ali and Ate Yvonne were there. I don't see them as much anymore since they started a church over at Huntington Beach. Pastor Ali was up on a ladder putting up Christmas lights. They told me they were going on the trip to Japan, too. At that point, I started to get emotional for some reason. I kept thinking that I shouldn't be going even though I felt that I wanted to. Oh yeah, right about then, I started to realize that my house looked like the old one in the Philippines instead of the one in Mission Viejo. Then I woke up. ^_^
Smallville - Scare:
Heheh. Speaking of dreams/nightmares, the most recent episode of Smallville had its moments with an enhanced repeat of the President Lex foreshadowing scene from a while ago. A lot of it was cheesy scary stuff, but I liked some of the background music they used for creepy ambience. There was a certain person in Chloe's panic sequence that looked like she was straight out of Juon/The Grudge. With her pale skin and extra-large, dark irises, I thought she was going to let out a meow when she opened her mouth.
Anyway, I've been looking into horror stuff and analyzing what makes them scary. Maybe I'll try to film something scary. No, not like Anong Sabi Mo? - Blair Witch. Personally, I don't find scenes that startle you or that have lots of gore and violence scary. I usually find those funny instead since they're so over the top most of the time. I tend to prefer scenes that are more creepy than anything and tend to linger in your mind long after the scene has ended. It could be because of the music, of the lighting, of the camera angle, or just the setting in general. That's probably why I thought the first Resident Evil (the game) was scarier than most movies out there.
Worship Team Workshop / Christmas Party:
We just had the Worship Team Workshop and then Christmas party tonight at Kuya Mitch's house. We watched a really helpful DVD called Worship Team Workshop. I think my favorite part of that video is when Paul Baloche et. al. demonstrated how not to play as a band. Each member started playing their individual instrument as if they were the only member of the band. Imagine each one playing a solo all at the same time. No consideration for the others' playing space. Man, that sounded awful. We kept saying, "Wow! That sounds like us!" Haha.
Good food at the Christmas party portion of the night. I ended up receiving two movie passes from the gift exchange. Cool. People started leaving at that point. Some of the older people stayed to chat. I hung out and played guitar and sang some songs with Justine. Including Blessed Be Your Name for about three or four times in a row. ^_^
Anyway, pictures:

More fireball fun:
I tried creating more effects with pIllusion. All of the videos should be working now and should no longer be "Forbidden". My ISP limited the domain names for the servers they were hosted under, so I had to change the exact URL for the links. Anyway, click below to check it out. Yeah, I'm a dork. ^_^;
Fireball Test
Tim Hughes will be at Newsong Church tonight for a night of worship. Can't wait!
